Day 5: Still in Kennebunkport

Another hot day in Kennebunkport!  Dad went out for a round of golf early this morning...just returned as I'm writing this post.  I wandered into town to shop a bit.. didn't buy anything!  Trying to figure out why the post Dad added a couple of days ago shows black text... still trying to adjust (quite unsucessfully) to the trackpad.  The left mouse button doesn't seem to work, and I don't have the external mouse here as I'm writing this in the garden of the Inn.

Will be heading out shortly to have lunch at Pier 77 with Jim & Maryann and Chip & Lyn, then a bit more down time until we have to dress up for the big 60th Birthday Party at the Golf Club tonite.  Not sure if I'll wear the new tuxedo shoes; they're really high!  We'll see :)   Mosquitoes had a party at Mom last nite so I'm trying not to scratch!!

The 60th Birthday Party was a lot of fun!  There were lots of "older" people (white hair) there from Maine; not surprising as Jim's family has been there for 6 generations!  Sylvia organized a wonderful event complete with lots and lots of food, dancing, and a special order belly dancer!  Not too many comments about the belly dancer except Maryann summed it up by her comment "if I really wanted to look at that, I'd just have to look in the mirror!"  She's so funny, I love her!  Syliva had arranged a surprise video "through the years" celebrating both Jim's life and hers; nice to see pictures of the kids as well.   Michelle (the younger daughter) made a lovely speech highlighting her parent's many wonderful traits; Dad got a special mention -- Thanks Michael Chow for sharing some of Jim's younger exploits, which help me to understand my Dad better.  Everyone got a big laugh out of that.

The party had over 110 guests and many were long time residents of the Kennebunkport area. Sylvia had asked all of us to stay at least until 10:00 pm. because we all thought there was some kind of a surprise.  I was thinking maybe the President George H.W. Bush would make a surprise visit to give Jim a toast since they both know the Bush family. To stay the full 4 hrs with  live music and singer was going to be a challenge standing around for all this time in the heat as the Club did NOT have any AC. Even had a dance with your mom!!!!

But many of the old timers started to leave at 9:00 pm and the out of towners started to drift off around 9:30 pm. We ended up leaving just before 10:00 pm and sadly there was no surprise guest drop in.

Beautiful day for a drive!  I was taking in all the beautiful mountains, lakes, very tall trees knowing that once I got into Manitoba and then across the Prairies, it would be flat and some say, pretty boring. Here was my route for today A couple of pictures I meant to send with yesterday's update: Note the trees are super tall and really skinny.  I think it gets really cold and snowy up here ... here being about 1/2 way between Timmins and Thunder Bay. Adding to my comment yesterday that 50% of the people who live up here Timmins/Thunder Bayish... are Francophones, the store signs and road signs are bilingual. Today's Observations: It appears that Moose only like Ontario.  West of Dryden (Ontario) and into Manitoba, I've only seen watch for deer signs.  And between Winnipeg and Brandon, it appears that the roads people know that there are only deer within a defined space (ie. watch for deer for next 2 km). First Stop Timmins

They say that Shania Twain comes from Timmins.  It's hard to believe that someone so famous came from this little town of 41 thousand people! Timmins is a very pretty town on the Mattagami River.  It's the 4th largest city in Northeastern Ontario.  The economy here is based on natural resource extraction and is supported by industries related to lumbering and the mining of gold, zinc, copper, nickel and silver.    Now it makes sense;  some of the signs I saw on my drive up here "DANGER" "DO NOT ENTER"  "BLASTING ZONE!" are everwhere. The drive up Highway 11 was pretty uneventful even with all of the road construction.   This must be the year to dig up and repave the roads!   Looks like they are doing a major widening of Hwy 400 North of King Road.   Lots of construction on Highway 11. I'm surprised that more truckers aren't using it, rather it appears (because of the lack of traffic) they are either going up Hwy 144 or Hwy 1 North of S

Cape Town

Hi Babes Just back from a wonderful dinner at Martin's Thumb seafood restaurant.   We had yummy calimari appetizers and fish.  Food is very cheap here! Luggage arrived last nite so all is good :) Today was a very packed day.  Breakfast at 7 and on the bus by 8:15, back at 5:30, lecture on the history and culture of South Africa, and dinner reservations at 7:30, back now at 9:30, blog at 10 .. and hopefully in bed by 10:30.  Another full day starting with bfst at 7 and on the bus again at 8:15 tomorrow. Today was a trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandella was imprisoned for 16 years.  A 30 minute boat ride to the island; felt like we were on a roller coaster!  Our tour started with a 45 minute bus ride around the island to see the town.   There are about 200 people who live on the island which is now a national museum.  The people who live and work there are government employees and former prisoners who are tour guides.
